Saw a scary fuel filter setup at a truck stop in Boise

I stopped at the big truck stop off I-84 yesterday and saw a guy trying to change a fuel filter with a cheap plastic wrench and a rag for a seal. He was about to crank it down way too tight, which would have stripped the housing for sure. Has anyone else run into this and what's the best way to help a driver in that spot without stepping on toes?

I saw almost the exact same thing at a rest area near Flagstaff last spring. This guy was using a pair of pliers on a spin-on filter and had already chewed up the edges pretty bad. Honestly, I just walked over and said my own housing cracked once from over-tightening, and offered my strap wrench. He took the help and was actually really thankful. Tbh most drivers just don't want to feel stupid, so I find it's best to play it like you've made the same mistake before.

Did @wren806's strap wrench trick work on that plastic housing too?
