Ran a side by side of rebuilt injectors vs new ones on an old 5.9 Cummins and the difference was night and day
Picked up a 2001 Ram 2500 from a guy in Denton last month. He swore the injectors were rebuilt about 10k miles ago. Truck ran rough, smoked like crazy on cold starts. I swapped in a set of brand new Bosch injectors and it idles smooth as glass now. No smoke, better throttle response. I know rebuilt ones are cheaper but after seeing this I'm never going that route again on a high mileage engine. Anyone else have bad luck with rebuilt injectors on these older Cummins?

Ngl those rebuilt injectors are a gamble. Some shops just clean em and swap tips without checking pop pressure or spray pattern. On a 5.9 with over 250k, the bodies themselves can be worn out. Tried a set of rebuilt ones from a reputable shop years ago, truck still had a stumble at idle until I switched to new ones. Bosch or OEM is the way to go if you want it right the first time.

Why are you acting like rebuilt injectors are ALWAYS junk? I've put a ton of them in customer trucks and my own stuff and they work fine. The key is finding a shop that actually does the work right, not just the cheap internet places. You can't blame all rebuilds because you got a bad set once. On a high mileage 5.9, sometimes the bodies are fine and just need fresh internals and proper pop testing. New Bosch or OEM is great if you got deep pockets but for a beater truck or something on a budget, a good set of rebuilts will save you real money and run just as good. Plenty of guys are pushing 400k on rebuilts with no issues.
