Old timer told me to ditch the torque wrench on head bolts
I was working on a 6.0 Powerstroke last month and an old mechanic I know came by. He saw me setting up my torque wrench and told me to put it away and just go by feel on the head bolts. Said the torque specs are garbage and you need to feel when the bolt starts to stretch. I was skeptical but tried it on a spare engine first. Snapped two bolts before I got a feel for it. Ended up costing me an extra $40 for new bolts and a Saturday afternoon redoing it the right way with a torque wrench. Now I'm wondering if that guy has ever actually finished a job without breaking something. Has anyone else run into these old school guys that swear the manual is wrong?

Bet @the_sam's 302 would snap a 6.0 bolt just by looking at it.

Ngl that old timer probably learned on engines where bolt stretch was way more forgiving and torque specs were basically suggestions. I've seen guys like that swear by feel for years but they usually work on stuff from the 70s or 80s where head bolts are giant and forgiving. Modern engines like that 6.0 Powerstroke are way more picky about clamping force and you need the precise number or you'll warp the deck or snap bolts. Honestly those old school guys mean well but they don't always realize torque specs have gotten way tighter and more critical with higher compression and thinner gaskets. I bet that same guy would tell you to just hammer out a seized bolt too.

Haha yeah "torque specs were basically suggestions" that's the exact vibe I got from him too. On my old 302 Ford I could totally get away with feel but anything modern like that 6.0 is a whole different animal.
