That time my player tried to argue disadvantage into advantage by 'rolling with intent'

I was running a D&D session last weekend and one of my players, Mark, spent 10 minutes explaining how he should get advantage on a perception check because he 'rolled with intent' and stared real hard at the door. He even quoted some forum post he found about the rule of cool, but I had to shut it down because we were already 3 hours in and the boss fight was waiting. Has anyone else had a player try to twist the rules with some half-baked logic that just made you want to flip the table?

Staring hard isn't a game mechanic. Just roll the dice and move on.

So you're saying looking at the dice isn't part of the ritual for you? Like not even a little bit of squinting or tilting your head when you really need that one number to come up? I get that technically it doesn't change the outcome, but I've seen people blow on dice, shake them in specific patterns, even talk to them. Where's the line between superstition and just having fun with it?
