Rant: That time a new player asked why my dice tray was a pizza box lid

I was running a session last weekend and this kid looks at my makeshift dice tray and goes 'why don't you just buy one?' Made me think about how we used to roll on whatever was around. I still have my first set of dice from 15 years ago, chipped and faded, and they tell more stories than any fancy tray ever could. Anyone else hold onto old beat-up gear for nostalgia?

@jake_martin16 You nailed it with that pizza box lid. I read a piece once about how gamers who've been at it for a decade plus tend to hang onto the jankiest stuff because it's got history. @sammurray gets it too - that well-worn tool idea is spot on. My buddy still uses a cracked Crown Royal bag for his dice, and every chip in those dice is a memory of some crazy nat 1 or clutch save.

Oh man, that kid just doesn't get it yet. I actually read somewhere that the best gear is the stuff that's been through the wringer with you, like a well-worn tool. Your pizza box lid has way more character than anything off a store shelf, and it's got stories baked right in.
