The 1e DMG page 72 changed how I read monster stats
Everyone treats hit dice as the threat level, but after reading the random encounter tables closely, I found most of the real danger comes from morale and numbers, not raw HP. Did anyone else notice the classic modules lean way harder on that than the rulebook lets on?
Eh, I think "risk of being totally wrong" is putting a lot of weight on a table that's mostly just rolling for wolves or goblins, you know? Morale's a fun quirk, but a 6 HD ogre still smears your party way faster than 20 scared kobolds, so I'm not sure it's some big hidden secret.
