Why does nobody talk about open-back headphones on a noisy bus?
Last month I tried wearing my open-back pair during a 40 minute commute through downtown Seattle and heard every engine rev and chatter over the music. It completely changed how I judge soundstage now, because isolation matters way more than detail in real daily use. Has anyone else ditched open-backs after a loud transit test, or am I missing something?

A 40 minute bus ride downtown is basically a free soundstage test, and most open-backs fail it. The engine drone sits right in the same low-mid range as a lot of music, so your brain has to work overtime to pick out the bass line from the rumble. That's why the noise feels like it's "over" the music instead of under it. Close-backs trade some of that airy width for a lower noise floor, and for commuting that trade is almost always worth it.
