Rant: The $150 dash cam that fried itself in the sun after 3 months

Bought a mid-range dash cam back in June because I wanted proof if someone rear-ended me at a light. Mounted it on the windshield, ran the cable along the headliner, looked clean. Three months later I go out to my car after work in Austin and the screen is black, the unit is hot to the touch, and it will never power on again. The box said it could handle up to 140 degrees, but my car sat in a parking lot all day and the interior had to be pushing 160 with that glasshouse effect. Customer support said heat damage isn't covered under warranty, so I'm out the full $150 plus the $20 SD card. Anyone else had a dash cam die this way or should I just buy a cheap one and treat it like a yearly consumable? I'm leaning toward a capacitor-based model but not sure if that actually solves the solar bake problem.
