Warning: don't try the 'skip the leash' method downtown like I did

I took my dog Baxter to the park near 5th and Oak in Portland last Tuesday thinking I could let him walk without his leash since he's usually great at staying close. Well, he spotted a squirrel and bolted across the street and almost got hit by a delivery truck. I spent 20 minutes chasing him around a fenced-off construction site before a guy in a hard hat helped me corner him. Now I always use the retractable leash I bought off Amazon for 15 bucks and it gives him some freedom but keeps him safe. Has anyone else had a close call trying the no-leash thing even with a well-trained pup?
