That muddy trail near Mill Creek finally made me see my leash habit
I always kept the leash super short, thought I was being safe. Then last Tuesday, my beagle Max pulled me sideways into a puddle and I noticed he was trying to lead me around a big root, but I kept yanking him back. Turns out I was fighting him the whole time, giving zero slack to let him navigate his own footing. Anyone else realize they were over-correcting their pup on uneven paths for years?
The "giving zero slack to let him navigate his own footing" line got me because I did the exact same thing for like three years. My shepherd mix would stop dead at every curb and I'd tug him forward thinking he was being stubborn, when really he was checking the step first. One time I yanked him mid-step and he stumbled into a bush, and I stood there feeling like the worst dog parent alive. Now I let the leash hang loose and he walks way better, go figure. My arm gets less of a workout too, which is honestly the only fitness plan I've ever stuck with.
