My vet tech mentioned most dogs need to sniff for 20 minutes a day, and it changed how I do our morning loop
I was in for my beagle Rufus's yearly checkup in Boise last Thursday when the vet tech asked how long our walks were. I said about 45 minutes, feeling pretty good about it, and she asked how much of that was sniffing versus walking. I admitted maybe 5 minutes, and she explained that sniffing is how dogs read the news, and cutting it short can make them anxious. So the last three mornings I've just stood there on the same block for 15 minutes while Rufus works over one bush, and he's been calmer all day. Has anyone else swapped distance for sniff time, and did your dog act different after a week or so?
