Pun generator apps are a trap, nearly bombed my set on Thursday
I used one of those free pun generator websites to prep 6 jokes for an open mic in Austin, figured it'd save me time. But the jokes came out so forced and clunky, I had to scrap 4 of them right before going on stage. The one that survived only worked because I rewrote the punchline from scratch. Anyone else find those tools useless compared to just riffing off a random word with a buddy? I'd rather get 2 legit groans from my own brain than 10 canned ones from an algorithm.
How long did it take you to rewrite that one punchline from scratch? I had the same thing happen at a show in Dallas last month, and now I just keep a list of random words on my phone and riff on those in the shower instead of messing with those sites.
Took me about two hours to get it back to something usable, and honestly the new version ended up better than the original. I like your phone list idea a lot more than feeding stuff into those joke sites, since the sites always spit out the same predictable setups. Riffing in the shower sounds weird but that's where half my best lines show up anyway. The real trick is writing the random words down before you forget them, because I never remember mine by the time I grab a towel.
