My brother says clean puns are weak, but his dirty ones just feel like cheating
My brother Rob swore up and down at his own birthday cookout in Fresno that a pun only lands if it has a little bite to it, and he spent 20 minutes proving it with jokes I won't repeat here. I think he has it backwards. A groan from a clean pun comes from the wordplay itself, and when you lean on shock value the audience laughs at the subject, not the joke. If the punchline only works because it is rude, is that even a pun anymore?
