Witnessed a stranger banking on open Wi-Fi at the cafe yesterday

I was sipping my coffee when I noticed the person next to me accessing their financial accounts on the shop's unsecured network. It made me cringe thinking about the risks, but I didn't know if intervening would be appropriate. How do you handle situations where you see others making obvious security mistakes in public?

Read an article last week about a guy who lost his savings from a Starbucks hack. If I witnessed that, I'd definitely say something. Better to risk a weird look than let them get robbed.

Seen it happen at a coffee shop once. Just lean in, keep your voice down. Tell them to check their card reader for skimmers. Saved a guy from losing his rent money.

Totally! When you're at an ATM or payment terminal, give the card slot a gentle tug. Skimmers often just snap on, so if it moves, alert the staff immediately. I've seen ones that mimic the original design perfectly, but the color might be slightly off, so pay attention to any mismatched logos or seams. Also, always cover your PIN with your hand because some skimmers have pinhole cameras aimed at the keypad!

Exactly, and that hesitation to speak up ties into a bigger bystander effect problem we have. In my view, we've become too conditioned to mind our own business even when a small action could prevent real harm. Normalizing that quick "hey, check your card" could build a more collectively responsible society.
