Update: That free USB stick in my complex's lobby in Tempe was actually a trap, and I almost fell for it
So last Tuesday I'm grabbing my mail at my apartment complex in Tempe and there's this USB drive sitting on the counter by the mailboxes with a sticky note that says "payroll files, please return to unit 214." I laughed and told my roommate someone is fishing for idiots. Then I stood there for like 30 seconds actually thinking about it, which scared me more than the drive itself. I googled it on my own phone right there and found out this is a whole thing called baiting, where crooks just leave drives around hoping you plug one in. I brought it inside using a napkin, and a buddy of mine who works IT offered to check it in a sandbox VM. It had a fake invoice file that would run a script the second you opened it and quietly grab saved passwords from your browser. I reported it to my leasing office and the manager said that was the 3rd one found this month. Now I'm curious, how many of you have actually found a random drive somewhere and what did you do with it?
