My neighbor's smart fridge tried to join my home network
I was setting up a new router in my apartment last month when I saw a device named 'FreshFood_Pro_7' trying to connect. It turned out to be the new smart fridge my neighbor downstairs had just bought. The default password was still on it, and the signal was strong enough to reach my place. I told him about it, and we had a good laugh, but it made me realize how many 'smart' devices broadcast openly. Now I always check for unknown devices on my network list every Sunday. Has anyone else found a weird appliance trying to get on their Wi-Fi?

My buddy's fancy new coffee maker kept popping up on his neighbor's network list. They finally figured it out when the neighbor got random brewing notifications.

Been there with a smart plug doing the same thing. First thing you gotta do is check the device's own wifi settings. A lot of times they broadcast their own setup network that nearby phones can see. Make sure it's actually connected to your home wifi and not just sitting in pairing mode. If it is connected, go into your router and rename your network's SSID to something totally unique from your neighbors. That usually stops the cross-talk.

Is it really that serious though? A coffee maker sending brewing notifications to a neighbor sounds more like a funny prank opportunity than a real problem. I've had a few smart devices do weird stuff like that, and I usually just factory reset them and set them up again. Takes five minutes. All this renaming your SSID and digging into router settings feels like overkill for something that probably just needs a quick re-pair.
