I finally figured out why my smart lock kept disconnecting
About three weeks ago my front door lock started dropping its wifi connection every single day around 7 PM. I checked my router logs and saw a ton of failed login attempts from an IP in a different state right before each dropout. I changed the lock's default admin password, set up a separate guest network just for my smart home stuff, and the disconnects stopped completely. Has anyone else had a smart device get targeted like this, or was I just unlucky?

Wait, you found failed logins from another state? That's actually scary! Changing the default password was the absolute right move, a lot of people never do that. Setting up a separate network is smart too, it keeps everything else safe if one device gets weird. You weren't just unlucky, these bots are always scanning for stuff with factory settings. Glad you got it fixed!

Yeah the part about bots always scanning for factory stuff really hits home. I used to think changing defaults was just for super paranoid people. Seeing those failed logins from somewhere else totally changed my mind on that.

So you had a digital door greeter from out of town trying the handle every night at seven? That's a special kind of modern problem. Johnh82 is right about it being scary, but I just picture some bored bot in a server farm getting locked out and moving on to the next house. Changing the default password is basically the bare minimum, like locking your actual door. Setting up that separate network was the smart move, it's like putting that one weird device in its own room.
