Can we talk about how 2FA backup codes destroy my flow

Everyone swears by backup codes, but after my phone died in Denver last month, I spent 45 minutes digging through my email for the 16 digit code while my accounts were locked. I switched to a hardware key for the important stuff and keep a printed list in my wallet for everything else. Anybody else find backup codes more trouble than they're worth?

Wait you spent 45 minutes digging through email?? I would've lost my mind. That's exactly why I print mine out now, no way I'm trusting a locked phone to save me.
