Why does nobody talk about how "write what you know" killed my short stories
I used to give that advice to everyone in my workshop at the library in Akron, until last year when I realized my prompt group had churned out 14 stories in a row about divorce and office jobs and nobody was excited to read them anymore. I switched to handing out random photo prompts and the same people started writing about a sunken bus and a diner at 3am, way better stuff honestly. So what prompt rule did you defend for years before finally admitting it was holding you back?
