The writing teacher at my community college threw out my outline and said something I still think about
Two years back I was in a short story class at a community college in Boise, and I handed in a 3 page outline for a 10 page story. The teacher, Ms. Alvarez, read the whole thing at her desk, looked up, and said, "You wrote the story already, you just don't know it. Throw this out and write the scene where she burns the letters." I did not get it at the time, but I rewrote the whole thing from that one scene and it was ten times better than my plan. Now I start every prompt by writing one scene I can see in my head instead of a plot map. Has a teacher or friend ever cut your outline down like that, and did it help or just annoy you?
