That writing prompt critique group gave me terrible advice for 2 months
Ngl, I joined a local critique circle in Portland back in March and one guy kept telling me to cut every piece of backstory from my prompts. He said readers only care about action, so I stripped my sci-fi prompt down to like 300 words of pure plot. Submitted it to a contest and got rejected, then a judge's comment said the world felt empty and they couldn't connect with the character. Turns out that guy had never actually published anything, he just repeated stuff from a YouTube video. I went back to my original draft with the 2 paragraphs of history and my next prompt got shortlisted. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from a critique group that set them back for weeks?
