Last month I grabbed a writing prompt book off the clearance rack at a Barnes & Noble in Sacramento for $4. It had a whole section on haiku, and a note said the 5-7-5 count is about sounds, not letters. I counted on my fingers for an hour and found 30 of my old poems were off by one or two beats. A friend who teaches 8th grade English read my mess and said, 'You were counting words, not syllables.' Now I clap out each line like a kid in music class before I write anything. What prompt from a random book totally changed how you count or write?
