Finally broke my 3 sentence limit after 6 months of writing prompts
I was stuck at a coffee shop in Portland last Tuesday trying to write a horror prompt and kept hitting a wall after 3 sentences. Out of nowhere a barista dropped a cup and the sound of glass breaking gave me an idea for a killer opening line. Has anyone else found a random noise or distraction that suddenly unlocked a scene for them?

Actually it was a half-dead Subaru backfiring outside my window at 2 AM that gave me my best horror idea in years. The car sounded like something choking and then snapping its neck, and suddenly I had a whole scene about a creature that mimics engine trouble to lure people out of their houses. Too bad I couldn't write it down because my phone was dead and I was too creeped out to go grab a charger from the kitchen. Isn't it hilarious how a broken car is more inspiring than an entire afternoon of staring at a blank screen? What did that barista say when they saw you turn their coffee disaster into a story?

Jumped in here ready to argue that "real" inspiration comes from careful observation and journaling (you know, the "proper" way). But honestly? Your Subaru story made me rethink everything. I had a garbage truck grinding gears outside my apartment once and it sounded exactly like a dying animal bellowing for help, and instead of getting mad I just sat there writing for two hours about a trapped spirit trying to communicate through mechanical sounds. That blank screen intimidation is real, and yeah, sometimes the broken stuff hits harder than anything you plan out.
