Decided between a detailed outline and zero prep for my short story, picked the middle path
Last Saturday I sat down to write a 3,000 word story for a local contest and had to choose: map out every scene like I usually do, or just dive in blind like some writers swear by. I went with a stripped-down version, just three bullet points for the start, middle, and end, nothing more. It took about 2 hours to finish and the twist at the end surprised even me, which never happens with my detailed outlines. Has anyone else found that too much planning kills the spark for short pieces, or is it just my own hangup?
