My roommate called my food safety habits "college freshman level" and honestly she was right
So my roommate is a line cook at a spot downtown and about 5 months ago she watched me put a hot pot of soup straight into the fridge and just stared at me. She said "that's a college freshman move, you're gonna get us both sick" and then explained how it warms up everything around it. I got defensive at first but then I thought about the time I left rice out on the counter overnight and ate it the next day and felt off for two days. Since then I've been doing the ice bath thing in the sink before it goes in the fridge, and I also got a cheap thermometer because she pointed out I was guessing on chicken every single time. Last month our other roommate reheated leftover pizza that sat out all night and I was the one telling him to toss it, which felt weird. She also got me to stop using the same cutting board for raw chicken and veggies, and I cringe thinking about how many times I did that. What finally got me was her saying she's seen people come into the ER for stuff way milder than what I was doing. Does anyone else have a roommate who basically became your mom against your will?
Get a digital thermometer you can stick in the pot and don't put it in the fridge until it drops under 40. Also get one of those thin plastic cutting mats for raw meat only, way easier than trying to remember which board is which. Roommate sounds like a keeper, most people just let you poison yourself.
