I finally understood why my old foreman was so picky about the hook block

Three years ago on a site in Denver, I was running a 250 ton crawler and my foreman would lose it if the hook block wasn't perfectly centered before a lift. I thought it was just him being a control freak, lmao. Last month, I was watching a new guy on a tower crane and saw his load swing almost six feet because his block was off by maybe two inches at the start. It clicked right then. That tiny bit of slack in the system gets magnified way up high. Anyone else have a 'oh, that's why we do that' moment from an old rule?

Yeah, that "tiny bit of slack" thing... it's the same reason they're so strict about hand signals on a loud site. A small mix-up down low becomes a huge problem way up there.

Honestly, that strictness always felt more about liability than safety to me. Seen a few jobs where the rules got in the way of just getting it done right. Sometimes common sense on the ground beats the official signal every time.
