Had a chat with a retired rigger who made me rethink my whole approach to load testing

Ran into this old guy Don at the supply house last Tuesday. He was picking up some shackles and we got to talking. He told me he never trusted the load charts at face value, always added 15% margin because he said the steel gets tired long before it gets weak. At first I thought he was just old school paranoid. But then he showed me a picture of a crane that collapsed in the 80s because the operator ran a load right at the limit on a hot day. That visual stuck with me. Now every lift I plan, I factor in a little extra buffer. Has anyone else had a veteran change the way you look at the numbers?

Respectfully disagree... steel doesn't get tired, bad math does.

Don's story about that 80s crane collapse gave me chills.
