Changed my mind on power line shutdowns after a close call in Gary
I used to wave off the proximity alarm as annoying and just slow down a bit, figured I had the feel for it after 9 years in the seat. Last month on a job in Gary, Indiana, my spotter yelled and I looked up to see the boom about 12 feet from a 69kv line I never clocked. Since then I've been using the full shutdown request form with the utility instead of eyeballing it, and it only added 40 minutes to the setup. Turns out the form guy at the utility walks you through the limits and it's way less hassle than I thought. Anybody else change their tune on paperwork after a scare, or am I just getting old?
