Caught a greenhorn using a level on a crawler crane

Went out to a site in Odessa last Tuesday to swap some rigging, and I spotted this kid on the crawler checking his swing angle with a damn bubble level. He was dead serious about it too, holding it up against the mast like it'd tell him something. I asked him what he was doing, and he said he was making sure the boom was straight, bless his heart. Has anyone else run into a trainee doing some wild overthinking on the job?
