Used to force everyone to play 4-player games no matter what, now I just pick 2-player games
I used to think couch co-op meant you HAD to get ALL four people on the couch involved every single time. Then last month my buddy brought over his little brother who gets overwhelmed by too much happening on screen. We tried two-player Overcooked while the other two just watched and passed snacks, and it was WAY more fun than constantly pausing to explain stuff. Now I keep a few 2-player games ready and let the group decide if they want to jump in or just hang out. Anyone else stop forcing 4-player chaos and find it actually works better?

Is it really that big of a deal to just have everyone play? I mean, pausing to explain stuff is part of the fun of teaching people new games. Seems like you're overthinking a simple game night, honestly.

Actually this is exactly the kind of thing I see everywhere now. People get SO caught up in "efficiency" and "optimizing" everything that they forget the whole point is to have a good time together. I've noticed this with my friends too - someone always wants to speedrun through the rules like it's a race, and then nobody actually understands the game and it's just confusing and frustrating. The "pause and explain" method is how I learned everything from card games to video games, and it builds patience and real understanding. We're all so used to getting instant answers from Google that we forget learning together IS part of the fun. Honestly I think this rush-rush mentality is making us worse at connecting with people in general, not just at game night.
