PSA: My group played Overcooked 2 for a year before we figured out the real goal
We always just tried to get three stars on every level, fighting and yelling the whole time. Last week, my friend's little sister watched us and said, 'Why are you so mad? It's funnier when you mess up.' That made me realize we were playing to win, not to laugh together. Do you think the best co-op games are about winning or just having a good time on the couch?

Wait, isn't the real goal both? The best couch co-op makes winning feel awesome, but the fails are what you remember and laugh about later.

But what if the fails just feel bad? I've had games where losing over and over just kills the fun, no laughs at all. Maybe the balance is way harder to hit than we say.

You're not wrong Ward, but hill.hugo has a point too. My buddy and I tried that one game where you're supposed to save a farm together and we must have lost like 20 times in a row. By the end we weren't laughing, we were just sitting there in silence staring at the Game Over screen like we'd been divorced. I'm the kind of guy who accidentally drives his character off a cliff during the tutorial so if the game doesn't let me laugh at myself, it's a long night. The best couch co-op is where the fails feel funny not frustrating, like when my character falls on his face and the other players can just keep going without me. But that balance is tough, some games just punish you for sucking and that's when I start wondering if I'd rather just watch Netflix alone.
