My friend called couch co-op a 'dead genre' and it made me mad

He said it during our game night, right before we booted up Helldivers 2. The thing is, sharing one screen forces you to actually talk and work together in a way online play just doesn't. What's a game that proved someone wrong about local multiplayer for you?

My buddy said the same thing last year. Then we tried "It Takes Two" on his old PS4. We were laughing so hard at the squirrel part we had to pause the game. He bought a second controller the next week.

I remember reading an article about how local multiplayer is making a comeback with indie games and it was talking about stuff like "Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime" and how it forces actual communication. @fiona332 mentioned Overcooked 2 and that's a perfect example, trying to coordinate in the same room is totally different than over a headset. There's this thing about seeing someone's face when you mess up or they throw a tomato at the wrong station, it adds a layer of fun that online just can't touch. My cousin and I tried "Plate Up" last weekend and we were yelling at each other but also laughing so hard we almost knocked over the snacks. So many people sleep on couch co-op but it's still one of the best ways to actually bond with someone over a game.

Yeah, the "dead genre" line got me too... I used to kinda agree until my brother made me play Overcooked 2 with him. Trying to shout orders while the kitchen is on fire and you keep throwing ingredients wrong... it's pure chaos but you have to actually work as a team. It's nothing like playing online where you can just mute everyone. Robinson.holly is right about "It Takes Two" too, games like that just hit different when you're in the same room.
