Why does nobody talk about how quickly those cute little terracotta pots can crack?
I bought a set of three from a local garden center for about $12 last Tuesday. I filled one with soil for some basil, set it on my sunny kitchen windowsill, and gave it a good watering. The next morning, I found a clean crack running right down the side, and the soil was already bone dry. I think the sun heated the pot too fast after the cold water. What's a better, cheap option for small herb pots that won't just give up on you?

My neighbor swears by those cheap plastic nursery pots you can get for a dollar. She just drops them into a nicer looking ceramic bowl for the windowsill. The plastic doesn't crack and it holds water way better.

Remember those old metal coffee tins? My grandma used to wash them out, poke holes in the bottom with a nail, and plant mint in them... they lasted forever on her porch. The metal got hot but never cracked, and the paint would chip in this cool way. I tried it with a soup can last year and it actually worked pretty well, just had to be careful of the sharp edge.
