Tried to patch a hole in my old quilt with thrifted fabric - took 5 tries to match the pattern

I had this 1950s floral quilt from my grandma that got a tear near the edge, but finding fabric that looked similar took forever. I spent 2 whole Saturdays digging through the bins at St. Vinny's in Portland before I found a pillowcase with almost the same tiny rose print. Even then the color was slightly off (mine had faded to a soft pink while the pillowcase was bright coral), so I had to tea-dye it twice to get close. Has anyone else had luck aging new fabric to match old stuff without ruining it?

Spent a whole afternoon boiling onion skins to dye a patch for my grandpa's old flannel shirt, smelled awful but worked pretty well.

That sounds like a real kitchen science project gone wrong.
