That time a neighbor's garden party changed my drying rack setup

Last spring I was at my neighbor Carol's little garden get-together and noticed she had all her herbs hanging from an old wooden ladder propped against her shed. I mean it looked so cozy and functional at the same time. I went home and tried the same thing with a cheap ladder I got for $8 at a yard sale, now I dry lavender and mint right in my kitchen corner. Has anyone else repurposed something weird for drying or displaying stuff?

Went to a thrift store last month and grabbed one of those old wooden windows with like 6 panes, the kind that swings open. Pulled out all the glass and wedged it into a frame I had. Now I hang my drying chili peppers from the crossbars. Looks kind of rustic and goofy but it works great. Had to sand it down because the wood was splintery. Thinking about painting it white but the weathered look is growing on me.

Picked up an old iron headboard from a curb once, leaned it against my garage wall and now I hang all my drying flowers from the scrollwork. The little curls and loops are perfect for wrapping twine around. Got a bit of rust on a few batches of chamomile but honestly it just made them look kind of vintage and cool.

That weathered look is probably way better than painted honestly. I did the same thing with an old storm window I found behind a barn, pulled the glass out and sanded down the sharp edges. The trick is to seal it with a light coat of linseed oil instead of paint, keeps the old feel but stops the splinters. I hang my garlic braids from the crossbars and it works way better than those flimsy wire racks from the store. Just make sure you screw some hooks into the frame on the back so it doesn't tip forward when you load it up. Learned that one the hard way with a pile of smashed peppers on the floor.
