One bad week with my sourdough starter taught me a good lesson

Last Tuesday I woke up to find my starter had a weird orange streak on top. I tried feeding it twice a day for 3 days but it smelled like nail polish remover instead of that yeasty smell. Turns out I was keeping it too warm on top of the fridge near the radiator. I moved it to a cooler spot in the pantry and by Friday it was bubbling again. Has anyone else had their starter go weird from temperature swings?

Did you read that one Bon Appetit article about how sourdough can get acetone smells if it's too warm? That's exactly what happened to mine once, lol, moving it saved it too.

Oh man, I've definitely been there. My starter smelled like straight-up nail polish remover and I thought I ruined it. Turned out I just had it too close to the radiator, lol.
