My neighbor Dana said my flour sack curtains looked cheap, and I'm still glad I hung them
My neighbor Dana came over for tea on Sunday and the first thing out of her mouth was that my flour sack curtains above the kitchen sink looked like, quote, something from a dollar bin. She's big on buying linen panels and I get why, but those sacks cost me $12 at a farm supply place outside town and I stitched them myself over two evenings. Here's the thing: they let in this soft gold light in the late afternoon that her heavy panels just block out. So which do you all pick for a kitchen window, cheap and airy or pricey and full, and does anyone else get grief for the handmade stuff?
Ha, my mother in law pulled the same thing with the shelf I built from old fence boards. She walked in, ran her hand along it, and asked if I was "going for a rustic look on purpose." I just let it go and now she asks where I got it every time she visits, because it holds way more than the store bought one she paid forty bucks for. Your curtains sound great, that soft gold light thing is real and you can't buy it. Dana can keep her heavy panels and her opinions. Handmade stuff has a story and a purpose, hers just has a receipt.
