My mom told me my garden looked like a mess last summer
She walked through and said I had too many different colors all jammed together, no flow to it. So I pulled everything and replanted with just whites and purples in groups of three, and now it actually feels calm and old-timey. Anyone else get real picky about color combos after someone called them out?

White and purple groups of three is a classic move, my mom had the same reaction to my front bed a few years back. She said it looked like a flower shop exploded, so I switched to just lavender and silver foliage plants, and it changed the whole feel of the yard. When you stick to a tight palette like that, your eye actually rests instead of bouncing all over the place. Your mileage may vary, but try keeping your tallest plants in the back of each group and let them repeat down the bed for that calm, old-timey look you're going for.
