My grandma's old trick for cleaning windows with vinegar and newspaper actually works

I tried it on my kitchen windows last Tuesday after seeing the streaks from the store bought spray. Mixed a cup of white vinegar with a cup of water in a spray bottle and used the local Gazette pages to wipe. No lint and they sparkled. Anyone have other old cleaning mixes that don't cost a lot?

Okay wait, you might want to change that mix! The vinegar to water ratio is usually one PART vinegar to four PARTS water. Using half and half is way too strong, it can actually damage some surfaces over time and the smell is awful. I learned this the hard way on my own windows. A quarter cup of vinegar in a spray bottle filled up with water is plenty strong enough to cut the grime. The newspaper trick is still genius though.

Wait, you used to do half and half too? I totally thought stronger was better for ages. @julia_burns9 is right about the smell, it really does stick around and give you a headache. I ruined the finish on my kitchen counter trying to be extra with the vinegar mix. Now I just do a quick splash in a full bottle and it works just fine without the worry.
