I finally tossed the old cardboard seed trays after mold showed up in the pantry
Last month I stacked 3 years of wet cardboard egg cartons in the pantry closet to start my tomato seeds, and on day 6 the whole shelf smelled like a wet basement. I pulled all 12 trays out, wiped the shelf with vinegar, and moved the seeds to paper cups with holes poked in the bottom, and they sprouted fine. Has anyone else had cardboard go fuzzy before the seeds even popped, or did I just stack them too close together?
Used to figure moldy cardboard was just part of the deal with seed starting. Turns out air flow matters more than I thought, and stacking them tight like that traps all the wet.
