Talking to a new stylist fresh out of beauty school about her color theory exam made me realize how much the fundamentals have shifted since I got my license.
She said her whole class had to learn corrective color using a digital app first, which is a far cry from my instructor just handing us a color wheel and a box of swatches back in '08.

Man, my buddy's wife is a stylist and she told me the same thing. She said the new grads she hires can't mix a color without an app telling them the exact formula. It's like they skipped learning the actual rules.

Man that's actually a good point about wasted product. Nobody's talking about how much less chemical waste there is when you nail the formula on the first try instead of guessing and having to dump a batch.

See it a different way honestly. That app is just a new kind of tool, like a better color wheel. It lets them start with the right formula so they can focus on how the color actually looks on a real person under real lights. The basics are still there, they're just learned in a different order. I get what @danielh81 is saying about missing the old rules, but the end goal is the same, a good haircolor. If the app helps them get there faster and with less wasted product, that's not a bad thing.
