Shoutout to the client who came in with a picture of a haircut from 1997
She brought a faded magazine photo, and matching that exact shade of frosty blonde took three rounds of color correction. Has anyone else had to work from a really dated reference lately?

That's nothing. My coworker had a guy bring in a literal pencil sketch his mom drew of a haircut he wanted. It looked like a cartoon character.

My sister once brought in a watercolor painting she did of a sunset to show what she meant by "warm copper" highlights. The salon owner just stared at it for a solid minute before asking if she wanted the color to match the pinkish part or the orange part. They ended up picking a swatch from a color ring instead and it worked out fine. Now whenever I see a tricky reference, I suggest people bring in a few options from magazines or just describe it in words. Paintings and sketches are nice but they leave too much room for second guessing.
