Remember when we used to foil by sight alone?
I started out in 2008 at a booth rental place in Kansas City and we didn't have any of those fancy foil guides or pre-cut foils. We just ripped and eyeballed every section. Now I use a foil guide for balayage and it saves me at least 20 minutes per full head. But sometimes I miss the old way, it felt more like an art. When did you guys start using foil guides or did you stick with the hand tear method?

Hand tearing forces you to stay locked into the section you're working. Saves me time too since I'm not stopping to place a guide over the next section. Old school is just faster muscle memory.

Haven't foil guides just made everyone lazy though? I still hand tear everything, takes practice but I can nail my placement way faster than watching someone fiddle with those pre-cut sheets.
