My cosplay hair experiment went too bright, any advice?
I recently tried to do an ombre hair color on my friend for a cosplay event. I used a bleach kit and a purple dye, but the purple came out way more vibrant than I expected. Now her hair looks almost neon under certain lights. I'm worried it might damage her hair if I try to fix it too soon. Has anyone dealt with overly bright colors before? What's the best way to tone it down without causing more harm?

Neon purple after bleaching is typical. Clarifying shampoo will fade it without more damage.

My purple hair last year washed out in like two weeks, even without clarifying shampoo. That neon stage is so annoying, right? I saw a video that said purple pigment molecules are just really small and don't stick well. @hill.hugo is totally right about the clarifying shampoo trick, it does speed things up. You just have to be ready for how dry it makes your hair feel afterwards. It's a trade-off between damage from more bleach and damage from stripping your hair dry.

Paige's point about the molecules is close, but it's less about size and more about how those direct dyes just sit on the hair shaft (they don't penetrate deeply like permanent color). That neon stage is super common. A clarifying shampoo will work, but it's pretty harsh. A gentler start is to use a regular sulfate shampoo and wash with really warm water a few times. If that doesn't dull it enough, a color-remover made for direct dyes is safer than bleach.
