My client's hair in Cincinnati showed me I was using too much tension

I was doing a silk press on a regular client and she mentioned her scalp felt sore for days after every visit. I watched my hands in the mirror and realized I was pulling sections way too tight with my comb, basically fighting the hair's natural pattern instead of working with it. I switched to holding the hair at the root with my fingers for support, and the difference in her comfort and the final smoothness was huge. Has anyone else had a specific technique click that fixed a problem you didn't even know you were causing?

That's such a good catch to make. Watching your own hands in the mirror is the best way to see your own bad habits. I had the same issue with tension when I started doing more natural hair. My comb work was way too aggressive. Learning to use my fingers as a cushion at the base of the section changed everything. It stops the pull on the scalp and actually lets the heat do its job better on the hair strand itself. The client should never leave feeling sore.

My silk press in Atlanta taught me the same thing, totally get what @perez.barbara means.

So the fingers act like a buffer?
