Just had to choose between foils and a balayage for a client today
I had a client with really dark hair who wanted dimension but didn't want to come in every 6 weeks. She was torn between traditional foils for more coverage or a balayage for lower maintenance. I went with the balayage since she lives in Austin and drives an hour to see me, and it turned out so good! Has anyone else dealt with clients who are scared of the grow-out phase?

Worrying about grow-out is basically just life planning in disguise, isn't it.

One of the big things people miss with balayage though is that it's not actually always lower maintenance if you have really dark hair. I mean, the grow out is softer sure, but you usually still need a gloss or toner every 8-12 weeks to keep it from turning brassy or muddy. So if she was worried about going 6 weeks between appointments, a balayage might actually need a mid-service root smudge or something down the line anyway. Idk, maybe it's just the salons I've seen in Austin, but most stylists I know still recommend a refresh around 10 weeks for dark hair.
