Hot take: hair masks are NOT a substitute for deep conditioning treatments

I used to think spending extra on salon deep conditioning was a waste when drugstore hair masks exist. But after 6 months of swapping them out, my client's bleach-damaged hair actually got worse. The masks just sat on top of the cuticle while treatments penetrate differently. Last week I did a side-by-side test on two sections of the same head, and the difference in elasticity was obvious. Anyone else find that some products just don't do what they promise?

Hard disagree on this one. Hair masks can absolutely work better than deep conditioners if you pick the right ones. The difference is usually user error or expecting too much from a cheap product. I've been using a $12 mask from Target for years and my hair has never been healthier. Salon treatments are just fancy marketing half the time.

@rayc38 I feel you on that Target hair mask, I've got one in my shower right now too. But the thing is, some of us with really damaged hair just need more than what a mask can do. I tried a pricey salon mask once and it didn't do much more than my drugstore one, but then I used a proper deep conditioner with heat and it was like night and day. The masks sit on top, the treatment actually gets inside. It's not about price, it's about how the stuff is made to work. Your hair might just be in a better spot than my client's bleach mess was.

$12 mask from Target for years? Your hair must be invincible or something.
