A regular at my chair said something about her gray coverage that made me pause

She's been coming to me for her color every four weeks for about two years now. Last Thursday, while I was mixing her formula, she casually mentioned she was thinking about letting it all go natural. She said, 'I'm just tired of the race against my own roots.' That phrase really hit me. I've been so focused on perfect coverage and seamless blends for my clients, I never really stopped to ask if they were tired of the upkeep. It made me rethink my whole consultation approach. Maybe I should be bringing up the option of a transition plan more often, instead of just assuming they want full coverage forever. Has anyone else had a client shift their thinking on gray hair, and how did you adjust your service?

Read a great article on "color fatigue" recently.

Honestly, that line about the race against her own roots would stop me in my tracks too. Tbh I'm shocked she kept up with every four weeks for two whole years without saying anything. That's a huge amount of time and money spent just to feel tired of it. Makes you wonder how many other clients are just going along with it because they think it's the only option.

Yeah, the "race against my own roots" part is so real. It's not just about the color, it's about that constant pressure. We get stuck in a routine and forget to check in. I've had a few clients lately who are just done with the fight. My whole thing now is asking "are we still having fun with this?" during the consult. Sometimes the answer is no, and that's okay.
