My mini excavator started blowing black smoke 3 hours into a job in Dayton
Was digging a trench for a sprinkler line last Tuesday when my 2019 mini excavator started pumping out black smoke and lost a bunch of power. It only had 1,400 hours on it and I just changed the air filter two weeks ago, so I figured it was a fuel problem of some kind. I shut it down right away because I did not want to make anything worse, and I checked the fuel filter first thing. The filter looked fine but when I drained the water separator I got a decent amount of junk out of it, way more than usual. I ended up dumping the fuel, swapping the filter, and bleeding the lines, and it ran okay the rest of the day, but I'm not sure that was the real fix. Has anyone dealt with black smoke on these small diesels that turned out to be something besides bad fuel?
Did you check the turbo? My buddy had the same thing on his kubota, black smoke and power loss, turned out the wastegate was stuck and it was overboosting or something. He swore it was bad fuel too til the shop found it.
