My excavator guy asked why I grease every 8 hours and I didn't have a real answer
Had a guy out to look at my 2019 CAT 305 last Thursday and he asked why I grease the pins every 8 hours instead of every 10. I said because that's how my old boss did it, and he just kind of nodded and said that's a $600 swing bearing says otherwise. He pulled up the manual on his phone and showed me the chart, and yeah, 10 hours is fine for what I do. Now I'm sitting here wondering how much grease and time I've wasted over 3 years. Any of you ever had a tech call out something you'd been doing one way for so long you never questioned it?
How many tubes of grease did that add up to over 3 years? I'm picturing a whole shelf of tubes you bought that you didn't need to. Did the tech say the extra grease actually does harm, like blowing out seals, or is it just wasted money and time? And did he check your pins while he was there, or just point at the chart and move on?
